To look something up

Verb

مطلبی را از کتاب استخراج کردن

Meaning: to seek information about something in a reference work.

Example: I looked up the works I didn’t know in a dictionary.

من معنی کلماتی را که نمی دانستم از فرهنگ لغت استخراج کردم.

To look up to someone

Verb

به کسی احترام گذاشتن، به دیده احترام و تحسین به کسی نگاه کردن

Meaning: to have respect and admiration for someone.

Example: He always looked up to his uncle, who was a teacher.

او همیشه به عمویش که یک معلم بود به دیده احترام و تحسین نگاه می کرد.

To give someone free rein

Verb

آزاد گذاشتن، به کسی آزادی عمل دادن

Meaning: to put few restrictions on the behavior of someone.

Example: The new teacher gives the students free rein to study whatever they want.

معلم جدید دانش آموزان را آزاد می گذارد تا هرچه که می خواهند مطالعه کنند.

to rein in something

به دقت کنترل کردن

Meaning: To control something or someone’s behavior closely.

Example: The government is reining in public expenditure.

دولت هزینه ی عمومی را به دقت کنترل می کند.

To give somebody the benefit of the doubt

حرف کسی را باور کردن

Meaning: to assume that a person or statement is truthful until proven otherwise.

Example: His alibi is suspicious, but let’s give him the benefit of the doubt until we know more.

عذر و بهانه او شبهه برانگیز است اما بگذارید تا کسب اطلاعات بیشتر حرف هایش را باور کنیم.

به خوبی رقابت کردن

Meaning: to perform reasonably well in a challenging situation.

Example: The other runners in the race are much more experienced, but he is holding his own against them.

دیگر دونده های مسابقه از تجربه بیشتری برخوردارند اما به خوبی با آنها رقابت می کند.

Meaning: to stay silent; to refrain from speaking.

Example: She was upset and wanted to say something, but she held her tongue.

Meaning: to be reminiscent of something; to remind

Example: This dish brings to mind a meal I once had in Paris.

این غذا مرا یاد غذایی می اندازه که یکبار در پاریس خوردم.

Verb

خبر نادرستی را تصحیح کردن، شرح درست واقعه را دادن

Meaning: to correct a false story ; to give a accurate information

Example: the media initially reported that the escaped animal was a tiger, but zoo officials set the record straight, announcing that it was a harmless kangaroo.

رسانه ها در ابتدا گزارش داده بودند که حیوان از قفس گریخته ببر است اما مسُولین باغ وحض خبر را تصحیح کردند و اعلام کردند که آن حیوان یک کانگوروی بیخطر است.

تمام چیزی را مصرف کردن

meaning: to consume something completely.

example: I couldn’t brush my teeth this morning because my brother had used up the tooth paste.

امروز صبح من نتوانستم دندان هایم را مسواک کنم چون برادرم همه خمیردندان را مصرف کرده بود.

sell something off

به حراج گذاشتم، زیر قیمت فروختن

meaning: to sell something, specially for a cheap price because you need the money or because you want to get rid of it.

example: after the war, we had to sell off part of the farm.

بعد از جنگ ما مجبور شدیم بخشی از مزرعه را به حراج بگذاریم.

to have one’s hands tied

دست کسی در زمینه ای باز نبودن، اجازه نداشتن

meaning: to be restricted; to be prevented from doing something.

example: I wish I could give you more information, buy my hands are tied.

کاش میتوانستم اطلاعات بیشتری به شما بدهم اما اجازه ندارم.

to lower the bar

meaning: to reduce standards so that it is easier to succeed.

example: When no one qualified under the original criteria, the admissions committee lowered the bar.

وقتی براساس معیارهای اولیه هیچ کس واجد شرایط نگردید، کمیته پذیرش سطح معیار را پایین تر گرفت.

meaning: to erupt or break out; to recur

example: my doctor had said the rash on my knee was cured, but it flared up again.

دکترم گفته بود که جوش روی زانویم مداوا شده اما آن جوش دوباره عود کرد.

احوال کسی را جویا شدن، حال کسی را پرسیدن

meaning: to inquire about the well-being of someone.

example: he heard your mother was in the hospital and called to ask after her.

او شنیده بود که مادرت در بیمارستان بستری است و به همین خاطر تماس گرفت تا احوال او را جویا شود.

حاکم بودن، حکم فرما بودن

meaning: to dominate; to have great influence.

example: the dutch held sway in New York until 1664, when the English took control.

تا پیش از سال ۱۶۶۴ که انگلیسی ها کنترل نیویورک را به دست گرفت هلندی ها بر آن حاکم بودند.

meaning: to perform an action as planned; to carry out

example: We went through with our plant to have a picnic in spite of the rain.

به رغم بارش باران ما برنامه ی پیک نیک خود را انجام دادیم.

meaning: to come eventually to a particular situation or place.

example: after walking for hours, they ended up in the same place where they started.

بعداز ۲ ساعت پیاده روی آنها از همانجایی که شروع کرده بودند سر درآوردند.

meaning: to assert that one has the right to something; to claim ownership of

example: both Britain and Argentina lay claim to the Falkland Islands.

بریتانیا و آرژانتین هردو مدعی جزایر فالکلند هستند.

از ذهن کسی گذشتن، به ذهن کسی خطور کردن

meaning: to occur to someone.

example: It didn’t cross her mind that she might be doing something illegal.

به ذهنش هم خطور نکرد که آن کاری که میکند ممکن است غیرقانونی باشد.

meaning: to keep or retain

example: he considered selling his motorcycle, but he decided to hold on to it.

او در نظر داشت که موتورش را بفروشد اما تصمیم گرفت آن را نگه دارد.
